REFURBISHMENT
About the Project
We recently completed a significant project at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH) aimed at addressing the critical shortfall in inpatient beds. This project involved creating additional ward areas to accommodate 140 new inpatient beds, utilising existing spaces where feasible to ensure compliance and quality. Specific to this development is the extension of the existing stroke unit to create an additional 7 beds as part of the existing ward.
Project Scope and Execution
Executing this project in a live healthcare environment presented unique challenges, necessitating a phased approach to minimise disruption to hospital operations. Key phases of the project included:
Asbestos Removal: Safe removal and disposal of asbestos to ensure a safe working environment.
Demolition: Demolition of the existing layout to make way for the new configuration.
Drainage Installation: Implementation of new drainage systems to support the new ward areas.
Floor Plan Configuration: Reconfiguration of the floor plan according to KKL drawings and specifications.
Mechanical and Electrical Installations (M&E): Installation of new M&E systems, including a new external Air Handling Unit (AHU).
Construction Works: New partitions, ceilings, and floor coverings. Installation of new Integrated Plumbing Systems and sanitaryware. Installation of new internal doors and creation of one external door leading to the courtyard. Fire stopping works to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.
Furnishings and Equipment: Installation of Group 2 items and various sundry items. Installation of storage units, shelving, worktops, and similar fittings.
Courtyard Landscaping: Enhancing the courtyard area to improve aesthetics and functionality.
Key Achievements
Adequate Bed Capacity: Successfully increased the bed capacity to meet emergency service demands, ensuring patients receive timely care.
Improved Hospital Flow: Enhanced capacity and flow through the hospital, reducing wait times and improving overall efficiency.
Workforce Sustainability: Created a sustainable environment for the workforce, contributing to better staff retention and job satisfaction.
Enhanced Infection Control: Implemented improved infection control measures, ensuring a safer environment for patients and staff.
Patient and Staff Experience: Significantly improved patient experience and choice while also fostering greater levels of positive experience among staff and volunteers.
Optimal Infrastructure Utilisation: Ensured the optimal use of physical infrastructure, maximising the hospital’s operational capacity.
