REFURBISHMENT

About the Project

Built in the 1800s, Holmwood House is a striking and historic residence nestled in the heart of Longham, Dorset. We were initially called in to investigate a leak that had caused significant water damage and mould to the basement flat. Upon further inspection, it became clear that the original damp-proofing had been improperly installed, necessitating a comprehensive refurbishment and waterproofing solution.

Built in the 1800s, Holmwood House is a striking and historic residence in the heart of Longham, Dorset. The property holds significant heritage value, having once been owned by Winston Churchill’s aunt, and a connection to the Spencer family. Over the years, Holmwood House has seen various private owners who have each played a part in preserving and adapting this distinguished home while maintaining its original character and charm.

We were initially called in to investigate a leak that had caused significant water damage and mould to the basement flat. Further inspection revealed that the original damp-proofing had been improperly installed, requiring a comprehensive refurbishment and waterproofing solution.

The project began with the complete strip-out of damaged materials, followed by necessary excavations and structural alterations. A new damp-proof membrane, lead flashings, and perimeter drainage were installed around the building, including the conservatory. Internally, new walls, ceilings, and partitions were constructed, along with a fully specified damp-proofing and insulation system to enhance energy efficiency. The property also underwent full electrical rewiring, installation of new windows and flooring, and complete internal and external redecoration.

Our carpenters handcrafted bespoke timber doors and carefully restored the original staircase, preserving the home’s historic detailing while introducing modern comfort and energy-efficient solutions.

The previously underutilised basement has now been transformed into a fully functional, self-contained flat, providing comfortable and independent living accommodation. The result is a thoughtfully refurbished space that maximises the property’s potential, improves energy performance
