OUR STORY
From humble beginnings to a trusted name in construction, our journey is one of steady growth, strong values, and a passion for building things that last. Founded on family principles and a hands-on approach, we’ve grown over the years into a dynamic team known for quality, collaborative partnerships, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
Our story is shaped by the people behind the name, who’ve helped turn a small local operation into a company trusted across the South for delivering outstanding results. This is our journey……

John Gilbert
Our journey began in 1977 when John Gilbert founded the company as a local building contractor, operating from his solicitor’s office.

First Vechicle
We moved into an office above an insurance broker on Holdenhurst Road in Bournemouth before expanding into a larger office within our accountant’s building. Our first three jobs on the first day were for a police house in Harland Road, Southbourne, Herbert Day Hospital in Alumhurst Road, Westbourne, and Poole College. Our first company van, purchased for £400, only lasted a few months.
New Premises - Markham Road
By 1985, we had secured our own premises on Markham Road, Charminster.

Nigel Gilbert
John's son, Nigel Gilbert, took ownership, continuing the family legacy. The team consisted of just two carpenters and three painters—one doubled as a van driver. Nigel managed paperwork and estimating, and his wife, Lynda, handled weekly wages. The larger projects required the expertise of a subcontracted estimator.

Expanding our Services
We expanded our services and specialised in maintenance and refurbishment, primarily serving local councils, including Dorset, Bournemouth, Hampshire, New Forest, and Poole. Our expertise extended to working with the Dorset Area Health Authority, Crest Hotels, Trust House Forte, and several major breweries such as Devenish, Inn Leisure, Hall & Woodhouse, Eldridge Pope, and Bass and Whitbread.

Allen Gilbert-Stroud
We entered a new chapter as Allen Gilbert-Stroud—third generation—officially took over from his father, Nigel. Having started on-site with his dad at just 16, Allen stepped into the leadership role in 2002 shortly after finishing university. With hands-on experience and a deep-rooted passion for construction, he grew the business, combining practical knowledge with a forward-thinking approach to building and leadership.

Growing the Workforce
Kimberley Brennen began her journey with us in an administrative role and has since grown into her position as Head of Finance and Administration. Her dedication, attention to detail, have made her an integral part of the our team.
New Director
Allen was offically made Director in September 2004.

Lee Humphreys
A key moment in our growth was bringing Lee Humphreys back into the fold. Lee had previously worked at Westmade as a Quantity Surveyor/Contracts Manager. Recognised for his talent, experience, and shared vision for the business. Lee’s return marked a significant turning point—his determination to drive operational excellence, coupled with his depth of knowledge in site management, became instrumental in Westmade’s expansion.
New Premises
Together, Allen and Lee provided a strong and dynamic leadership. We established a new base at an office in Bargates, Christchurch, operating initially with a small but dedicated team of just five employees. Lee stepped into the role of Project Manager. Meanwhile, Allen was the company's Estimator.
Winning Jobs
“I remember the first big job I priced back in 2004 was £115k alteration for Hillbourne Primary school but this is now what we’d consider a small works job”
Allen Gilbert-Stroud, Managing Director
New Director
Lee was officially made Director in October 2005

On the Move
We took a significant step in 2006 when we moved from Christchurch to new premises in Verwood. Allen and Lee revitalised the company by rebranding and investing in our fleet, bringing in new clients, and increasing our workforce.

Growing the Workforce
Sam Cooke began his journey with us as an Estimator. His commitment to detail and hands-on involvement helped develop the estimating processes we follow today. Sam has since progressed to become our Head of Estimating and Surveying, leading the team with expertise and precision.

Growing the Workforce
Dave joined us as a skilled carpenter, quickly proving himself as a valuable asset on site. Through dedication and a strong work ethic, he progressed into site management roles before transitioning into the office. Today, Dave is our Head of Operations, overseeing all site teams and ensuring the smooth delivery of projects across the business.

On the Move Again
We were on the move again, just around the corner. Initially occupying the ground floor of the new building in Verwood. It wasn’t long before we had the opportunity to expand into both floors of our premises, which is where we are today.
Growing the Workforce
Hayley Brooks joined us as Marketing Manager and quickly made an impact by establishing a presence across our social platforms. Her creativity and strategic thinking have played a key role in enhancing our brand visibility. Now as our Head of Business Development and Marketing, Hayley brings fresh energy to our tender processes and has significantly strengthened our networking and client engagement.

Office Refurbishment
The start of a refurbishment project of our office. This exciting development marks a new chapter in our continued investment in our employees, our workplace, and our long-term vision as a business. The project focuses on transforming the existing two floors into a more professional, modern, and welcoming environment—designed with both employees and clients in mind. From creating meeting rooms and breakout areas to improved facilities and refreshed interiors.

Today
We’ve evolved into a trusted name in the industry, known for delivering results, reliability, and dedication. Our team has grown to over 50 employees, with a robust supply chain and a portfolio of clients that includes multiple NHS and Social Housing Frameworks.
